Needledrop Of The Day - Culture Club - Church Of The Poison Mind from Colour By Numbers (1983)
Well I did what everyone probably expected which was let this little feature lapse for about the last month or so. However it's been in the back of my mind the entire time. I've hunted down a LOT of very interesting vinyl to share with everyone so let's dive back in.
This album is a classic example of one that just sounds WAY better on vinyl. A lot of people offer various reasons for this phenomena but to me it's rather simple. It's simply mastered better. This album has big bouncy wonderful bass and very clear, precise highs with tons of detail. The CD? Not so much...it sounds fine but is definitely lifeless compared to the album.
I've always wondered why I've never heard a cover band take on this song. It's danceable, was a huge hit, and is also one of those songs that lots of people forget they love. This is just a wonderful song from a band that I wish would come back and make another record. Back in the 80s I always kind of thought that the "other 3 guys" in Culture Club were just sort of there to fill out the videos, but when Randee and I saw them live I was surprised to find out that Roy, Jon, and Mikey were EXCELLENT musicians. What a great band.
