Needledrop Of The Day - Neil Diamond - Longfellow Serenade/I've Been This Way Before - Love At The G
Was just reminded that today is Neil Diamond's birthday. Reason enough to post up some Diamond. I have more Neil Diamond vinyl than any other performer. I just love the guy. And it's not in a "it's so bad it's good" way either. Sure, the guy definitely has a Las Vegas thing going on, and it is in FULL force on this 1978 live album "Love At The Greek". The way he says "Thank you Los Angeles you've been fantastic" at the end of this recording will surely cause you to laugh, because it IS corny.
But, the guy knows how to write songs. And his style is all his own, part rock and roll, part gospel, part Motown...you name it. I got turned onto Neil Diamond by my mother, who spun this particular album pretty frequently. Then I went through some teenage years when only Iron Maiden was cool but when I grew up started listening to Neil again. Now that the turntable's fired up I'm spinning a lot of old and new Neil records.
This album was actually produced by Robbie Robertson of The Band fame. Longfellow Serenade (along with The Last Picasso) were never included on any CD version of this album. So that's why I have the vinyl in this case, it's the only way to hear the complete package.
Those of you that have seen my Neil Diamond impersonation can take note that this late-70s era is exactly what I am copying. His vocal delivery is unique to say the least!
